In this first episode of my sitting room makeover series, we’re diving into cabinetry! I catch you up on where I left off after putting this project on hold for months, then jump right back into building custom cabinets from scratch. From cutting and finishing the cabinet backs to building a base with an integrated toe kick, I’ll walk you through each step and share some important new tweaks.

I’m also facing a unique design challenge—working around an air return register in the wall! I’ll show you the airflow solution I’ve designed, and how I’ll eventually disguise it with a custom toe kick featuring a decorative air vent detail. Plus, I’m trying out a new tool: the Kreg Accu-Cut track, which has helped me get precise, straight cuts without needing a table saw (which I’m steering clear of these days!). For the final look, I’d love your input: Should I paint these cabinets Sherwin Williams’ Black Fox to match my fireplace, or stain them a rich dark walnut color? And should I style the wall above the cabinets with floating shelves or add a large piece of artwork flanked by sconces?
