DIY Upholstered Ottoman | Custom Build for Under $125!
In this video, I’m showing you how I built a custom upholstered ottoman for under $125! 🎉 This ottoman is part of the same room as my recent DIY library wall (made from IKEA Billy Bookcases), and while I can’t show you how it looks in the space just yet, I’m sharing how I would style it in my home. You might recognize a few pieces from a previous vlog and my fireplace that I talked about in an earlier design video. 😉
I take you through every step of this project—from building the interior frame, adding foam and batting, to sewing the cover and putting it all together. While I was able to keep the cost low thanks to some materials I already had on hand (plywood and upholstery foam), this DIY is still an affordable way to get a high-end look!
Cost Breakdown:
Plywood (4'x8'x1/2"): Free (typically ~$25–$50)
2"x4"x8' Studs (I used 2): $3.65 x 2 = $7.30
#8 2" Screws (50 ct.): $6.98
Wood Glue: $3.68 (I already had on hand)
JT21 3/8" Staples (I used 2 packs): $3.94 x 2 = $7.88
Spray Adhesive: $6.37
Twin Size Quilt Batting (I used 2): $12.88 x 2 = $25.76
Upholstery Foam: $10 (got at a yard sale, but typically $30–$50)
Fabric (~57" x ~3.25 yards): ~$18.00 (from JoAnn’s clearance section)
Thread: $2.27
Polywall Utility Panel: $25.98
Optional Add-Ons:
Bun Feet (set of 4): $41.92
Mounting Hardware: $15.12
Wood Stain: $7.47
Total Cost (without bun feet): ~$118
Total Cost (with bun feet): ~$182
Even if you’re buying all the materials new, it’s still a budget-friendly way to create a custom ottoman that looks high-end! 🙌
